Dawn of Man Series Progress

I’m making decent headway on the first large piece in my Dawn of Man series, but at the same time, I'm giving myself more to pause and consider.

Here’s the armature, or rebar if you will for the main form:

After the diagonal bracing started to go in, I really started getting attached to the line work of the supporting structure. I even gutted all of the internal stiffeners that were used early on to initially hold things where they belonged so that I could better resolve what it was I was seeing. This view caused me to reconsider my choice of concrete for the skin. Concrete really fits with the earthly ties the piece is inspired from, but so do many other media.

Speaking with my professors and having a critique last night reinforced those feelings, so likely I will be making some significant changes to the plan for the surfaces. I’ll have to do some soul-searching and make sure my jumble of new feelings ideas tie together cohesively. Either way, I’m apt to still utilize concrete. However, there’s a good chance I’ll finish portions with hammered copper and steel. Further, I’m contemplating leaving some open work in the rear to expose the internal structure and/or allow some portions of the line work to be evident from the outside.

There is a slight chance the wall will be omitted in this exploration, but it’s somewhat integral to the story so it won’t go down without a fight. The tough work ahead for me on this piece is resolving its form in a way that makes visual sense.

... In Motion Entry Concept

For Metal & Jewelry Design we've been tasked with designing and crafting an entry piece for a runway exhibition at the Burchfield Penney Art Center this fall.

I've decided to go with a necklace whose focus is mass, using hollow-form linked copper elements thusly:

It'll have a built-up layer of similar elements creating a mass mid-chest and flow/taper off to one side. Time, material, and energy permitting, a matching themed bracelet and ear adornments will accompany the model down the runway. ...whoever that ends up being. :s  Updates to follow, of course...

Dawn of Man Series

My primary focus for sculpture this semester is going to be based on a successful piece I did in 2008 titled "Dawn of Man".  I intend to push both the theme and the medium further as well as increase the scale to human-sized works. I envision a 3-piece series. One will be to do a life size version of this rendition of "Dawn of Man"

The next rendition (likely the first to be sculpted full-scale) will be to transform the figural form and re-relate the meaning and impact of the shell form. Drawings for this form, are still explorative.

Finally this is a a concept sketch of the third exploration. It will likely change considerably...

I'm excited to be moving forward in this series. I'll post pics and scans as they become handy.

Thanks for your interest.

Weeeee

So, yeah, here me is.

I've got a crusty journal over at livejournal.com http://glenstew.livejournal.com/ where I keep images of some of my student work. Those should give you a hint of my aesthetic.

I hope to post some updates and sketches of what i'm getting into right now. And since it's being required of me, it'll likely happen so check back soon.
